Getting the interviews can be a challenge (unless you're referred), but when you have them, I bet you "pull your hair out" wondering how you did and what you should do for your next steps. You think you did and said all the right things, but you won't know for sure until you hear back. "If" you hear back---even if the recruiter said you would.
Being prepared, and following protocol (thank you notes, etc.) is what's expected, but even if you have "the perfect interview session(s), there are no guarantees.
You know why? Because you're dealing with subjectivity, prejudgements, and different levels of experience with your interviewers. That's why it's so important to have multiple options---several interviews set up and having them with hiring managers
is preferred (not just recruiters). Hiring managers are the ones feeling the pain and are the decision makers. You get to them by being referred through your network.
For those of you who detest "networking", consider it's effectiveness over job boards. You'll meet incredible connections who will be mutual resources for a job change.
The right mindset and approach can "actually make it fun"---a real quote by one of our clients. So, make those referrals happen for yourself because the recruiting community and online job applications don't really care about how good you are and how bad you need that perfect job.
