Does the subject line drum up a few familiar scenarios? Such
as:
Conversations with colleagues that ended abruptly
Your last interview when the communication was awkward
Viewing an emotional post from a peer that just lost their job.
We've all been through it..
"What could I have done differently?"
"I wish I had thought of a better response."
"I'm not sure he knows what I'm capable of."
"I forgot to take the lead." ...etc.
The
more skilled you are at guiding the conversation around what's relevant and positioning your value, the more likely both parties will walk away thinking: This was worth my time—and there’s more we can do together.
Ask OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS to uncover challenges and needs.
Position VALUE STATEMENTS and stories around their challenges.
End with ACTION-TAKING rather than: “Nice talking to you".
Steering a Conversation or Interview
(Hint: it's a strategy)
You can steer a conversation when you're networking and in interviews. Watch this video clip on STEERING THE INTERVIEW from my conversation withRyan Clarkduring his podcast: The Market Messiah Show.
The difference between you and the other person is how you show your attention to "the details".
Seeing details that make a difference come from preparation, practice, developed communication
skills, and outside perspective that make you aware of what you're missing.
