A job interview is a strategic exchange of information---an opportunity to connect the dots between who you are and what the hiring manager needs.
In many cases, responding reactively is the course of action, then waiting for the next question. With that, the interviewer is left thinking:
“That was interesting… but are they really right for this role?”
“They seem smart… but I’m not sure how they’ll solve the specific challenges here.”
“They’ve done a lot… but I’m not clear on the impact.”
Here’s what needs to change:
Lead and structure the communication to deliver
relevance...
Every role has a unique set of needs and you may only have 30 minutes!
Your job is to decode what matters for this specific role—and shape every answer, example, and story around that.
You can do that by asking up front what their most
important challenges to solve are in the next 90 days.
Then POSITION YOURSELF:
✅ Clarify what the interviewer is really trying to learn with each question ✅ Communicate examples that match the level, complexity, and outcomes relevant to the job ✅ Make your thought process visible so they can
"see" how you operate. ✅ Close each response and leave them with the exact picture they need to confidently say “Yes, this is the person.”
Here’s a simple framework you can use to connect the dots:
1. Anchor to the
role Identify the challenge. This orients your answer to their context—not just your history.
2. Tell a focused story Present a concise example with
a beginning, middle, and end. Include your thinking, not just your tasks. Highlight decisions, trade-offs, and outcomes.
3. Make the connection Tie the story back to how it prepares you to succeed in this roll. Don’t assume they’ll do that math themselves—you "connect the dots" for them.
In the short video below, I share an example of how you can unintentionally leave the wrong impression in an interview, and a suggested correction.
