Not familiar with the term? Here's what it is: Ghost jobs are job postings that are typically not meant to be filled and can include: -Jobs posted to fulfill a legal requirement -Job postings that are merely scouting for talent -Jobs that have been filled- but posting stays live
Why Do Employers Do This?
One of the top reasons is due to a perceived talent shortage:
- Many employers became anxious over the "Great Resignation" that occurred shortly after the pandemic. - Having a ghost job posted for critical skills helps employers jump start their
search when a replacement is needed. - It gives the company the appearance of being "healthy and growing" when there's an economic downturn.
They’re frustrating for job seekers, and they waste your time.
How to Spot a Ghost Job
The good news is there are typically some tell-tale signs:
👻 No salary range 👻 Vague job descriptions 👻 No company name or specific location 👻 Interview requests without phone screens
If a job posting fits any of these signs, it could be a ghost job. Validate it.
While it still may be worthwhile to apply, keep in mind you may never hear back.
