Hint: It's not applying online
Hi ,
There's a proven method for finding your next career opportunity that actually works quite well. It is the best way to find jobs that are not advertised, too.
It's been around for years and much older than the highly promoted online application system.
Attending events and online networking for relationship building is what can lead to finding hidden opportunities. Making the most of it requires preparation in setting goals for networking, identifying your audience and tweaking your communication to find an opportunity, get referred, or get introduced.
Are you talking with hiring managers or recruiters? Remember that a company recruiter does not make a hiring decision and usually, they are not interested in networking.
They focus on their process which includes Applicant Tracking Systems to manage 1000s of candidates.
When you apply
online exclusively, you are wasting a lot of time that could be spent meeting the professionals that are decision makers and need to solve a problem---and that's when you show up.
Who Do You Network With?
1) Begin with
First Degree Connections that you know: Colleagues, Peers & Partners that you’ve worked with before. This will give you practice in having a strategic conversation and sharing your value and impact with a person that you know and knows you and the work you're exceptional at---it can take the edge off of the conversation.
You never know when a colleague you worked with 8 years ago is now a CEO. Most of the time, they will be quite pleased to hear from
you.
2) Following a company? Network with connected professionals that are in a
decision-making capacity at companies you’re interested in.
3) WIth the right messaging, contact Company
Executives/C-Suite and other Leaders that you want to pursue, whether or not they are connected.
4) A referral
or introduction can come from unexpected places. Your peers may not be hiring managers, but you never know if they are friends with the CEO of their company or another company and would be open to introduce you. Ask your connections to open doors for you.
5) Each new connection can be a source for growing your network and it’s up to you to stay focused on the right connection and ask for what you need.
