Strategic Networking is an action for  engaging with your colleagues and peers.  It's challenging, time consuming, and not totally comfortable.  But, it's what high performing leaders do to attain strategic, organizational goals.  Strategic networking is also their source of career advancement opportunities. 

 

HOW LEADERS CREATE AND USE NETWORKS,,a Harvard Business Review Article, defines 3 types of networking. 

• OPERATIONAL NETWORKING, good working relationships to get the job done
• PERSONAL NETWORKING, a safe place for personal development
• STRATEGIC NETWORKING, for business leaders navigating strategic organizational goals.

All 3 can work together, however, it's STRATEGIC NETWORKING that is considered to be the most challenging and most avoided.  It's where business leaders network broadly---inside and outside of the company.  Their database of contacts includes colleagues and executive peers at other companies. 

 

"As they step up to the leadership transition, some managers accept their growing dependence on others and seek to transform it into mutual influence. Others dismiss such work as “political” and, as a result, undermine their ability to advance their goals."

 

But, a strategic networker will reach out to people they know or those they've never met.  A company leader will catapult reaching business goals by engaging with other leaders as mutual resources for ideas, guidance and opportunities.
